Burning the Devil

Each year Guatemalans celebrate my birthday, December 7th, with massive drinking, carousing, parades of devils and bonfires with a celebration called el Quemado del Diablo (the burning of the devil). Luckily they didn't notice that I was there in person and they only burnt my effigy. Phew. It's one of what seems to be an [...]

Culture shock

Ok, I've been suffering a bit of culture shock changing locations a little too quickly in the last week: Tarifa surfin' town Spain, Tangier in Morocco, Gibraltar a little bit o' the UK, Granada and now the Super 8 Motel in Houston, friggin Texas just outside the lovely George Bush Airport. Tomorrow, I'll be in [...]

New York Carrot and Stick

Colorfully dressed people bustle along narrow meandering cobblestone streets. They are incredibly friendly and unshy. It is truly fantastic to me, takes my breath [...]

A 19 year old London black cab, 3 friends, the British Red Cross and the Guinness Book of World Records -what do they all have in common? Normally nothing. But, in this instance – everything. Life was nice and easy in the US for Rachael and Josh. Then, Josh’s employers gave him the opportunity to work abroad – in Dakar, Senegal to be exact.
