Breakfast at the Casa de los Amigos, Mexico City

Calle Ignacio Mariscal is an unassuming street in the colonia tabacalera of Mexico city. The street stretches only six blocks between the Paseo de la Reforma at one end and the spot where it dies in the lap of an apartment complex at the other. As far as streets go in Mexico city it is quiet. The hum of traffic is of course always present whether the windows are open or closed. However you can also hear the song birds on the roof or in the many clandestine internal courtyards. The conversations inside the apartments and restaurants spill onto the poorly maintained sidewalks. And, if someone is playing music, which someone nearly always is, it too echoes against the plaster buildings and finds you wherever you are.
