The Cranky Yank

Blog profile

The “Cranky Yank”, aka Dan Prescher, is definitely cranky but also passionate about the places he and his wife, Suzan Haskins, have chosen to reside during their 10 years of ex-pat life. Crankiness, passion and “old-fashioned” common sense make this blog worthwhile whether you are serious about relocation or fantasizing from the family armchair in the den. You will find some gems.

Hello Dan Prescher: I am writing to you in hope that I can get just a little bit of advice from you. First, let me give my credentials: I am a Dr. of Psychology and have U. degees as follow: BA, MEd., EdS., & PhD in Psychology. I am now 73 years old and in good health. I retired in 2001 from the ERS system of Texas, USA. However, I have been in private practice since then, with my specialty, Psychometrics by doing Psych. Evals. for Juvenile Probation Programs around West Texas and doing some MMPI screening test for 4 Adult Detention Centers in Texas. I am interested in relocating in Cuenca, Ecuador as a professor in one of their U. programs, in that I am fluent in Span.
I would like your advice & some U. contacts in Cuenca. I have lived in Juárez, Chih., México for 4 years & own a house there, as well as having citizenship in México. By the way, I published a book about my experience of “One Bad Night In Mexico” (But 100 Good Poems in the USA).
I only get a small amount of entitlements of about $1700 per month (VA & SS), but I leave my ERS retirement income for my 2 children in the U. here in Odessa, Texas (Both also majoring in Psychology). As such, I wish to work for a few more years to supplement my income. So, I respectfully request your indulgence, because I know that you & your wife have lived there in Ecuador & you have first-hand knowledge about it. Please respond to my request. Thank you for your time.
Respectfully Yours, Dr. Tomás Sutón B.

Life was nice and easy in the US for Rachael and Josh. Then, Josh’s employers gave him the opportunity to work abroad – in Dakar, Senegal to be exact. Rachael being a freelance writer/photographer made the decision to move that much easier. So, they packed up their belongings, including two dogs and headed off to Africa, where they will reside for the next couple of years.
